Is The Holy Bible Silent About Abortion?

Planned Parent Hood ProtestRecently, Planned Parenthood proudly displayed to the world a “Pastoral Letter” that claims the Bible is silent on the subject of abortion. This is a major lie about a fundamental pillar of the Christian faith. Plenty of people, some even in the pulpit will disagree with me, a lay person making a meager attempt to disagree but take the time, to see for yourself if they’re correct.  Is the Bible really silent about abortion?

Life Begins at Conception

No medical doctor, no pediatrician, or biology research scientist will argue this undeniable, rock solid fact of life. At the moment of fertilization the woman’s egg has a unique identity made from the chromosomes of the father and mother. Yet incredibly, even in the Christian community, there are still varying opinions on whether the unborn like the rest of us deserve the same right to life we have. Okay, people will disagree but what does the Holy Bible really say if it says anything at all about the matter?

Pt. #1: God is Sovereign Over Everything

You need no help from me to find this declaration in numerous places beginning in Genesis. What one will not find are any exceptions or exclusions to it. Since they aren’t there and he is master and lord over all we can safely assume he also claims sovereignty over the very act of conception of life too. We need only read further in his Holy Bible to find that truth.

Psalm 127:3, tells us to behold that children are a heritage from the Lord.

Genesis 16:2, 9-10, an angel of the Lord promised to multiply Hagar’s descendants exceedingly.

Genesis 20, describes how the Lord had completely closed the wombs of the house of Abimelech, and in :17, Abraham prayed that the Lord would heal Abimelech’s wife, and his maidservants so they could bear children…:18, for the Lord had closed up the wombs of the House of Abimelech.

Genesis 21:1-2, tells how the Lord made Sarah, Abraham’s wife, to conceive fulfilling a promise to her to give her a child.

In Genesis 25:21, Isaac pleaded with the Lord because Rebekah was barren… and the Lord granted his plea and Rebekah his wife conceived.

In Judges 13:3, the angel of the Lord appeared to the wife of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, and he told her “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.” The resulting child was Samson.

In Ruth 4:13, when Boaz went unto Ruth “..the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.”

1 Samuel 1:5-6, Hannah was barren “..because the Lord had closed her womb.”

In 1 Samuel 1:19-20, they “worshiped before the Lord…and Hannah conceived “because I has asked for him from the Lord.”

Job 10:8, says Job cried out “thy hands fashioned and made me altogether” and in vs. 9, “remember thou has made me as clay.” In vs. 10-12, he asks “Did you not you pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese, clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews? You have granted me life and favor.” Later in vs. 31:15, is the question “Did not He who made me in the womb make them?” In Chapter 33:4, it reads “The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

Psalm 139:13-16, speaks of the unborn having a soul, it’s physical body being formed under the supervision of God and the days and events of its after birth life are prerecorded.

Isaiah 44:2, “Thus says the Lord who made you and formed you from the womb…”

In Hosea 9:11&14, the prophet by that name tells how the northern kingdom was enjoying a time of economic prosperity but a moral decline. God retaliates by inflicting “No birth[s], no pregnan[cies], and no conception” upon them. He “[gave] them a miscarrying womb…”

In Galatians 1:15, the apostle Paul tells of how God separated him from his mother’s womb.

Pt. #2: Only God Can Create a Soul

God fashioned us in an image of himself but because of Adam and Eve it is stained by an ugly blot of sinfulness. No life has ever been created outside the image of God, nor without a soul installed by God. What pro-choice people fail to realize is whether we create human life the “old fashioned way” or in a test tube we cannot create a human soul; only God can. See:

Psalm 22:9, says “But you are he who took me out of the womb…”

Psalm 100:3, declares that we should “Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who made us, and not we ourselves..”

Psalm 104: 30, speaks of God’s life giving force: “You send forth Your spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth.”

Ecclesiastes 12:7, speaks of the dust [you and me] returning to the earth and the spirit [our individual souls] returning to the God who gave it.

Isaiah 42:5, is a call to everyone from the Lord who created the heavens, who gave breath to people on his earth, and spirit to those who walk on it.

Jeremiah 1:5, tells us that “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” He saying He knew us, each of us personally, before we were even being formed in the womb!

Zechariah 12:1, announces the word of the Lord who stretches out the heavens, lays the earth’s foundations and forms the spirit of man within him.

In Matthew 1:18, concerning the birth of Christ, it tells of how Mary was pregnant, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 12:9, tells of the importance of God’s discipline, his chastening of us when he sees fit. “Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?”

Pt.#3: All Innocent Life, No Matter It’s Condition is From God

The helpless creation is the object of Gods loving care. No matter the circumstances that causes a child’s conception God wants that unborn child to be born and live to fulfill the grand, cosmic purposes God has for it.

It is man wanting to be like god that justifies the killing of the unborn (and the aged, frail and feeble) when the following question is asked:

“What about [insert excuse here such as: deformed babies/babies born into poverty/babies born of rape or incest/in advanced aged or deteriorative condition, etc.] why should they endure a life of suffering?”

The ultimate proof of how deep our collective atheism runs is by how we answer such a question.

In Exodus 4:11, the Lord asks “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?”

In John Chapter 9, the disciples asked Jesus if it was the blind man’s or his parent’s sin that caused his blindness. Jesus answered: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed through him.” He was saying this man was born blind for the glory of god.

Pt #4: Compassion Is to be Applied to all of God’s Creations

Since compassion is what the Lord feels towards all then this is how we should feel. If we fall back on the Jewish principle of loving our neighbor just as we love ourselves which the Christ repeated in Matthew 22:39, then loving, looking out for the best interest of, and caring for the well-being of our neighbor (a medically/biologically known living being) applies to those outside of and in the womb too.

Pt. #5: The Biblical Consequences of Killing An Unborn Child

Exodus 21:22-23, prescribes the penalty for someone who causes the premature birth of a baby. The example given is two men fighting. One or both of them causes a woman with child to give birth prematurely and the child comes out of her body. Whatever harm the baby suffers in this chain of events be it an injury, or the loss of a limb say an eye, ear, etc., is what the perpetrator will suffer.  If the baby is dead or dies so does the perpetrator. Now what is this saying?

It is saying that to cause the death of an unborn child is the same as murder. It’s God’s law of retaliation (lex talionis). It is built upon “thou shall not murder” found in Exodus 20:13.  That child, born or not, is the object of God’s profound love and if you injure or destroy it you will pay by suffering whatever injury it suffers including death.

Genesis 9:6, says that whoever shed’s man’s blood by man his blood shall be shed, clearly makes the point that if you take a life you lose your life.

Psalm 106:35-41, tells of Jews and the pagans they mingled with and how they sacrificed their own children to the Canaanite gods so much that “…the land was polluted with blood.” Perhaps you’ve heard or maybe even used the figure of speech: “The blood of that person’s death is on his hands!” Well the blood of the innocents was on the hands of even Jews, God’s chosen people, who did such things and His wrath was kindled and he removed his protective hand away from them and they were conquered and enslaved for generations.

Now many will say “Oh, that’s Old Testament law! Why Jesus changed all that!” No he didn’t.

In Matthew 26:51-52, Jesus revealed that he was a leading proponent of capital punishment. It tells how Peter tried to cut the head off of one of the soldiers who came to arrest Jesus but his knife went off target and severed the guy’s ear. Jesus told him to shield the weapon. “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” That was not a prophesy. It was the Christ saying if you take an innocent life you give a life. He was articulating the law of God.

In Acts 25:10, Paul when he appeared before Festus said that if he had done anything worthy of death he did not object to dying.

In Romans 13:4, Paul again repeats that God believes in capital punishment telling his readers that the authorities they live under do not wield the power of the sword for nothing. Rather God gives it to them to protect the weak and the innocent and to avenge and punish and if necessary to dole out death to the evil.

Like the ancient Canaanites, America is stained with the blood of over 50 million babies who have been sacrificed upon the altar of “convenience”, “a woman’s right to choose” and “quality of life” to the point that God has every right to take his protective hand from around us. Corruption, evil and sinfulness abound and not just in Washington D.C., or in that other city, town or community! If someone, you, me, or a leading politician have no problem with someone violating God’s protective laws for our most innocent why would we be surprised when other laws are broken?

Isn’t it a wonder in itself that God doesn’t just strike down the United States of America since His laws to protect the weakest among us continue to go unheeded? He promises to ultimately do so, to destroy the earth with fire. Could it be that as a precursor to that terrible, terrible Day of the Lord we suffer in other ways?

For starters isn’t the well that so much sin we see comes from one of disobeying God laws, and dismissing, even laughing at the concept of fearing Him? Who can blame Him when he throws us between the teeth of the slow, gradual grinding of the wheels of societal destruction?

To conclude, if you are a woman who had an abortion; a man or woman who participated in, paid for, or encouraged an abortion God can forgive you for it. His only son, Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, stands with his arms wide open to do so if you will only repent of it and accept him as the lord and master of your life. Next find a bible believing church. There you will find others who have been justified by faith and strive every day to seek sanctification in their daily walk with the Lord. Some of them had blood on their hands too but it’s been washed away, blotted out and replaced with the crimson white grace that can only come from Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ.

I’ve only scratched the surface on this matter.  There are many other places in the Holy Bible that refer directly and indirectly about the sanctity of innocent human life that I didn’t cite for time a space considerations.  Just ask yourself: “Is the bible really silent about abortion?”  To those who would still say “Yes!” is going to Hell really worth denying the obvious?
